Matt talks to Lisa Stein, CFAO of StoryCorps, New York City resident, and our first East Coast guest! The pair talk about everything from life in the Big Apple, to life after the pandemic; questions to ask a potential board member, to questions Matt and Phillip’s dog psychic answered for them. Yup, you read that right.
Story Corps is the largest archive of oral history in the US, with stories stored in the Library of Congress. Will this conversation be among them? Time will tell.
EPISODE #09
MATT:
Can you tell a 21-year old why they should move into the finance and operations piece of running a nonprofit?
LISA:
Numbers are just another way of telling the story. Numbers permeate everything. You can have the best vision, but if you can’t operationalize it, it will flop or not be sustainable. And it doesn’t mean you don’t have the capacity to have vision, or share in vision, or support vision; your tool kit is just different.
I think the main thing I would say to someone is: be bold. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. I have definitely had spectacular failures, and they make me stronger. And you learn and you figure out what to differently the next time.
