Leadership Fatigue? Time to Check Your Symptoms
From the desk of: Matt Kamin
As a former executive director himself, Envision co-founder and managing partner Matt Kamin knows firsthand how exhausting it is to be the face of an organization. The role can be lonely, demanding, and let’s face it, occasionally soul-sucking. At some point, every ED or CEO has to ask: Am I done here? Take a look at the list of symptoms below. If you exhibit 3 or more, it may be time to schedule an appointment with your primary care mentor.
Recurring Sunday Night Stomachaches
Persistent stomach discomfort, irritability, or a deep desire to fake the flu every Sunday evening. May intensify with each staff meeting on your calendar.
Frustration Fever
Sudden onset of eye-rolling, teeth grinding, or dramatic sighing in response to board emails, budget meetings, or staff Slack messages.
Passion Deficiency
Noticeable drop in mission enthusiasm. Activities that once sparked joy now feel like soul sandpaper. May lead to excessive scrolling of LinkedIn job listings.
Chronic Restlessness
Feeling caged, creatively stunted, or professionally under-stimulated. Common in leaders who have grown beyond their role or who daydream of starting a llama farm in Vermont.
Irreplaceability Delusion
Compulsive need to "wait for the right person" before stepping down. May come with side effects like martyrdom, micromanaging, or secretly rewriting your own job description to make it look impossible.
